Top 5 Luxury Train Journeys in the world.

Travelling through not over in absolute luxury

I’m very happy to shout that I’m an unashamed train geek, I love trains, I love the opportunity they offer, the simplicity of them and the wonder that I had as a child dreaming of where we’d go that day.

Its for this reason that I actively choose to travel by train through rather than over numerous countries in the world.

Some of my train experiences have been a little rough and ready, such as squeezing into a cabin with some Mongolian traders as we crossed the Steppe on the Trans Mongolian in Winter. Others such as the Eastern and Oriental offer refined luxury and elegance as you journey through the Jungles of South East Asia.

But what are the top 5 Luxury train journeys in the world?

Its subjective of course, but for me the top 5 are as follows.

The Rocky Mountaineer, what better way to see the Canadian Rockies than through the glass domed roof of your carriage as you amble your way slowly through the vast vistas of some of the worlds most beautiful scenery. Traversing mountain ranges while you sip Canadian Ice wine is surely one of the great indulgences while travelling.

The Maharajas Express, is opulence defined. Travelling to incredible Indian sites such as the Taj Mahal, Ranthambore to tiger watch and the holy city of Varanasi, will give you an wonderful insight into some of the wonders of India while enjoying the finest cuisine and service on board a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Venice Simplon Orient Express, whether you are choosing the iconic golden age of rail route from Paris to Istanbul, or some of the shorter routes between Paris and Venice for example, the experience will be second to none. Experience Europes most remarkable landscapes, amongst opulent luxury and incomparable cuisine. The name is iconic with the finer things in travel, and you will not be disappointed if you choose to travel on the Orient Express.

The Ghan, traversing continents is what train travel is all about and considering a Darwin to Adelaide adventure over some of the least populated areas in the world is a delight and exploration in itself. At almost 100 years of age the route is both steeped in history, but also in luxury and excitement, an intoxicating blend. Linking the Tropical Darwin with the Bohemian Adelaide is also a delight with National Parks and incredible degustation to be devoured along the way.

Rovos Rail, travelling over numerous routes around Southern Africa, whether it’s the Namib desert, the thunderous Victoria falls or trundling over the Karoo, it’s the balance of adventure with the glamour and excitement of the Golden age of rail travel. Opulent wood panelled suites allow for restful slumber while you dream of Africa rolling by outside your suite.

To travel by train is truly to enjoy the essence of slow travel, to enjoy the view rather than rush past it.
