OUTER GREAT BARRIER REEF – AUSTRALIA
Remote, exotic, pristine are three of the ways I’d describe the exquisite Lizard Island after my stay on the island. The understated luxury of the hotel, nestled into the surrounding flora and fauna with barely a leaf out of place is the first thing you notice after your short flight touchs down on the private runway.
The next sense is calm and peace, as you walk though the open plan elegance of the main foyet and are greeted with the gentle breeze off the ocean and limitless views of the Azure waters of the Coral Sea.

Our pool villa opened up with unobstructed views of the beach and sea and allowed us to just relax and chill to the noise of the ocean and the gentle breeze and rustle of the palm trees lining the shade around our secluded piece of paradise.
Lizard Island is both a luxurious escape as well as a National Park and Science research centre, and is the only luxury lodge located directly on the Great Barrier Reef. Its proximity to the Outer Barrier Reef, the remotest part of the reef means the ability to see what the reef should look like when compared to the bleached and damaged inner reef is an experience that will change your perspective on the wonders of the sub aqua.

Activities abound on the island from Reef Research Centre visits, to twilight reef cruises,snorkelling/diving and fishing to being able to get your own delicious hamper and pop off around the island in your own motorised dinghy, self guided to explore the numerous secluded bays and beaches for your own romantic picnic. The latter of which for me was an absolute delight and something I’d never personally experienced before.

The dining matches the ambience and is truly wonderful but without any pompousness or pretentiousness, matched wine pairings with world class seafood are all included and the fully inclusive board package leaves no reason not to dine on Michelin standard cuisine as much as required.
So if you are looking to experience something truly unique, special and ultimately relaxed with understated luxury then Lizard Island will not disappoint.
