As I raised my hands in the praying motion to namaste my welcome host, I was greeted with the tinkling of wind charms and the light warm breeze of a Balinese spring.
Following quietly away from my chauffeur I was guided through a long dark marble corridor which blocked out the light and view I was about to be engulfed by.
Passing around the corner the vista and wonder of what Mandapa is was revealed in glorious abundance.
To describe this is almost impossible but to say my jaw dropped is an understatement. The Original Entrance Pagoda is elevated above the Jungle canopy below and the gentle Agung river horseshoeing its way around the resort. Rice fields adorn the hill sides around and throughout the villas below and the gentleness and peacefulness of this tranquil piece of paradise is obvious immediately.
The “green” in bali and especially in the ubud region is just breath-taking in their range and Mandapa can boast every possible shade to colour its palm trees, foliage, flowers and rice fields, its a beautiful abundant place.
After staring quietly for some time in meditation at what fell below me, I was moved away down into the body of the hotel complex, following gentle winding pathways and into my very own pool villa, nestling the banks of the river.
Dark Teak, blended with original tapestries and art work from the central region, gave an authentic feel of my Balinese temple complex (as all Balinese homes are created to represent a religious place), the statues growling at me and the colourful flowers and inquisitive dragonflys combined to create a true sense of luxury while being understated and subtly part of the natural environment I found myself in.
Floating in the pool later on, I drifted watching the clouds roll past and listening to the river sweep past endlessly to the ocean miles down stream.
As hotels go Mandapa isn’t simply a place to rest ones head, it is a place to lose yourself and enter a state of meditation and peace which I personally have found unmatched. The rejuvenating quality of that place has stayed with me ever since.
